  • [B! y Roberto Pedone]

A consumer goods player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Amira Nature Foods (ANFI), a global provider of packaged Indian specialty rice, with sales in over 40 countries. This stock has been in play with the bulls over the last three months, with shares up 25%.

If you take a look at the chart for Amira Nature Foods, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong for the last five months, with shares soaring higher from its low of $7.44 to its recent high of $17.41 a share. During that uptrend, shares of ANFI have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. Shares of ANFI have started to break out above some key near-term overhead resistance levels today at $15.92 to $16.25 a share. That move is quickly pushing shares of ANFI within range of triggering another big breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ANFI if it manages to break out above its all-time high of $17.41 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 226,387 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ANFI will set up to enter new all-time-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $25 to $27 a share.

Traders can look to buy ANFI off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day at $15.03 a share or around more key near-term support at $14.72 a share. One could also buy ANFI off strength once it starts to clear $17.41 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Best Blue Chip Stocks To Watch For 2014

BALTIMORE (Stockpickr) --Put down the 10-K filings and the stock screeners. It's time to take a break from the traditional methods of generating investment ideas. Instead, let the crowd do it for you.

From hedge funds to individual investors, scores of market participants are turning to social media to figure out which stocks are worth watching. It's a concept that's known as "crowdsourcing," and it uses the masses to identify emerging trends in the market.

Crowdsourcing has long been a popular tool for the advertising industry, but it also makes a lot of sense as an investment tool. After all, the market is completely driven by the supply and demand, so it can be valuable to see what names are trending among the crowd.

While some fund managers are already trying to leverage social media resources like Twitter to find algorithmic trading opportunities, for most investors, crowdsourcing works best as a starting point for investors who want a starting point in their analysis. Today, we'll leverage the power of the crowd to take a look at some of the most active stocks on the market today.

Cheap stocks may always be my mainstay, but next downturn, I'll definitely dedicate a portion to quality, too. I've built up a short list of companies I really admire -- companies that could grow at above-average rates for decades. Moreover, it's starting to appear that Clorox has weathered a tough part of its business cycle. Throughout the industry, Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG  ) , Colgate-Palmolive (NYSE: CL  ) , and Clorox all had to deal with rising costs for the inputs they needed to make their respective products. The companies responded by implementing price-cutting measures and passing on part of their higher costs to their customers. For its part, Clorox was able to expand its gross margins by a full percentage point, with a worse-than-normal flu season contributing to sales. Now that input-cost inflation is easing, P&G and Clorox expect to see better profitability, with growth starting to approach the faster rates that Colgate has enjoyed.

    2) The Street Misguided Guidance As Howard notes in the first paragraph, the company sacrificed on the experience in order to achieve the growth, development, and scale necessary to go from less than 1,000 stores to 13,000 stores in just 10 years (that an average of more than three new stores each and every day for a decade). A lot of this was in hopes of satisfying the street, which led to decisions focused on short-term growth rather than long-term sustainability. Unfortunately, the commoditization of the cookie cutter model destroys brand equity, and leads to price competition; considering that a cup of black coffee at Starbuck is more than twice the cost of a black coffee at McDonald (MCD), it appears that management made the right decision in rethinking the brand experience and moving back towards the core: differentiation.

Best Blue Chip Stocks To Watch For 2014: Philip Morris International Inc(PM)

Philip Morris International Inc., through its subsidiaries, engages in the manufacture and sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products in markets outside of the United States. Its international product brand line comprises Marlboro, Merit, Parliament, Virginia Slims, L&M, Chesterfield, Bond Street, Lark, Muratti, Next, Philip Morris, and Red & White. It operates primarily in the European Union, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Canada, and Latin America. The company is based in New York, New York.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Patricio Kehoe]

Phillip Morris International Inc. (PM) is the world largest tobacco manufacturer in the world, after China National Tobacco, and holds 29% of the entire industry market, outside the U.S and China. Most commonly known for its flagship brand, Marlboro (accounts for one-third of total volume), this firm also owns seven of the 15 international leading cigarette brands. Its supporting brands &M, Phillip Morris, Bond Street, Parliament, Chesterfield and Lark ave allowed the company to attain consistent growth margins over the past decade. Given its addictive product and global manufacturing and distribution system, this comes as little surprise.

  • [By Maxx Chatsko]

However, you would be hard-pressed to find any connection between falling smoking prevalence and share performance at Reynolds American (NYSE: RAI  ) , Lorriland (NYSE: LO  ) , Phillip Morris (NYSE: PM  ) , and Altria (NYSE: MO  ) . These companies are some of the best performers in the past decade. In fact, Altria is the best-performing stock of the last half-century!

  • [By Morgan Housel]

For most of the last decade, investors scooped up stocks that had big international exposure with the idea that they would provide a hedge against a weakening dollar. Companies that do most of their business overseas, like Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO  ) (73% overseas), Philip Morris International (NYSE: PM  ) (all overseas), and Intel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) (85% overseas), looked compelling as a hedge against the U.S. economy's faults.

  • [By Tim Melvin]

Some of the traditionally defensive stocks like Phillip Morris International (PM) and Merck (MRK) also fail our test for operating conditions and financial changes. Yield chasers have also pushed the value of their shares to unsustainable levels, and are unlikely to see much more than mid- to low-single-digit profit growth for several years.

Advisors' Opinion:

Still, IBM (NYSE: IBM  ) has shown that such a transformation can be done. The former hardware giant has done a stellar job of moving into higher-margin server and IT services businesses. In particular, by focusing itself on the big-data needs of businesses seeking to mine voluminous amounts of information for business-enhancing knowledge, IBM managed to get an early jump on its similarly sized competitors and remain at the forefront of innovation in tech.

Korean Brokerages Fall After Short-Sales Ban Lifted

Daewoo Securities Co. (006800) led shares of South Korean brokerages lower in Seoul after the nation lifted a five-year ban on shorting of financial stocks.

Daewoo, the country's second-largest brokerage by market value, sank 6.1 percent, the biggest intraday decline since December 2011, to 8,930 won as of 12:13 p.m. on the Korea Exchange. Samsung Securities Co. (016360) slid 2.7 percent and Woori Investment & Securities Co. fell 5.2 percent, while the benchmark Kospi index rose 0.6 percent.

South Korea began allowing investors to short sell shares of banks, brokerages and other finance companies from today, lifting a ban that had been imposed in October 2008 to bolster stocks at the height of the global financial crisis. The Financial Services Commission said the nation's equities market has stabilized since July and removing the restriction may help improve trading volumes.

"Brokerage shares seem to be particularly vulnerable after the ban on shorting was lifted as the industry's profitability has been weak," Kang Seung Gun, a Seoul-based analyst at Daishin Securities Co., said by phone today. "It's hard to expect an earnings turnaround in the sector in the near term."

Top 10 High Dividend Stocks To Buy Right Now

Among the 62 brokers operating in South Korea, 26 failed to make profits in the April-September period, while combined industrywide earnings plunged 63 percent from a year earlier as broking fees dropped and earnings from trading stocks and bonds with their own accounts shrank, the Financial Supervisory Service said in a statement on Nov. 11.

South Korea lifted the ban on short sales -- which occur when an investor sells borrowed securities in anticipation of a price decline -- for non-financial companies in June 2009.

  • [By George Acs]

Barclays (BCS) is emblematic of what US banks went through a few years ago. The European continent is coming to grips with the realization that greater capitalization of its banking system is needed. Barclays got punished twice last week. First for suggesting that it might initiate a secondary offering to raise cash and then actually releasing the news of an offering far larger than most had expected. Those bits of bad news may be good news for those that missed the very recent run from these same levels to nearly $20. Shares will also pay a modest dividend during the August 2013 option cycle, but not enough to chase shares just for the dividend.

Advisors' Opinion:

The primary speculation about Microsoft Corp.’s (NASDAQ: MSFT) deal to buy Nokia Corp.’s (NYSE: NOK) handset business is that it gives the huge software company a building block to catch, or at least replicate, the success of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL). Apple’s rise has been led by the launch and upgrades of its spectacularly successful iPhone and iPad. Apple churns out new versions of these products at least once a year. The latest will be released in just a few days. The Apple iOS has been successful as well, heralded as easy to use and nearly bug-free. Microsoft faces the problem that, even if it can build attractive smartphones with wonderful features and functions, it has to enter a market that Apple and Samsung have dominated for years.

AT&T (NYSE: T  ) isn't waiting too long to roll out Nokia's (NYSE: NOK  ) new tablet, the Lumia 2520. The telecom giant said that it will make the product available for its customers starting next Friday. It's priced at $399.99 as long as the buyer signs a two-year contract, and can be had for $199.99 if bundled with both a contract and one of three Lumia smartphones -- the 925, 1020, or 1520.

Hot Oil Companies To Watch For 2014

Two energy issues have passed our screen for low-price to book value stocks; both stocks have price to book ratios of less than two, Value Line Financial Strength rating of B++ or better, and forecasted EPS growth during the next 12 months of 15% or higher, notes J. Royden Ward, editor of Cabot Benjamin Graham Value Letter.

Apache (APA), founded in 1954 and based in Houston, is one of the largest independent exploration and production companies in the US, with operations in Canada, Egypt, the UK, Australia, Argentina, and Chile.

During the past three years, Apache has made four major purchases totaling $12 billion. The company's aggressive buying spree has added substantial crude oil and natural gas assets with great potential.

Exceptional production growth could push sales and earnings considerably higher than expected. Apache sold 33% of its troubled assets in Egypt to Sinopec for $3.1 billion, which will help to pay down its debt.

After a sharp drop in EPS in 2012, caused by slower production, and low oil and natural gas prices, Apache is poised to bring newly acquired production online and increase sales by 9%, and boost EPS by 32% to $8.85 during the 12 months ending September 30, 2014.

Midstates Petroleum (MPO) has surged 21% to $3.46 after the independent E&P company easily topped analyst earnings forecasts.

Jamba (JMBA) has tumbled 9% to $11.74 after the juice store missed the Street’s earnings and revenue expectations. Jamba also announced a $25 million share buyback program.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One energy player that's starting to move within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Midstates Petroleum (MPO), an independent exploration and production company focused on the application of modern drilling and completion techniques to oil-prone resources. This stock is off to a rough start in 2013, with shares off by 30%.

If you look at the chart for Midstates Petroleum, you'll notice that this stock has recently come out of a nasty downtrend that took shares from over $8 to its low of $4.26 a share. Shares of MPO have started to find some buying interest over the last month at $4.44, 4.26 and $4.48 a share, as the stock has held those levels on recent pullbacks. This could be signaling that a bottom is forming for MPO, since the downside volatility looks over. Shares of MPO are now rebounding strong off those support levels and are quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in MPO if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $4.82 a share and then once it takes out its 50-day moving average at $5.30 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 542,939 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then MPO will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $6 to its 200-day moving average of $6.54 a share.

Traders can look to buy MPO off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $4.48 or $4.26 a share. One can also buy MPO off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Onshore, my favorite play is the Utica Shale, in which my top plays are Gulfport Energy Corp. (GPOR) and Rex Energy Corp. (REXX). Both companies have highly economic acreage, solid balance sheets and industry-leading production growth. I also like Rex Energy for its likely production upside. Another one of my favorite plays is the Eagle Ford Shale, in which my top plays are Penn Virginia Corp. (PVA) and Sanchez Energy Corp. (SN). Both have core acreage in the region, improving operating results and experienced management. Another favorite name of mine is Midstates Petroleum Co. Inc. (MPO). The company has assets in three solid plays and a management team with a long successful track record. Those are my favorite names at this time.

Snam SpA (SRG) dropped the most in almost a year as Eni SpA sold an 11.7 percent stake in the owner of Italy biggest natural-gas network. Wm Morrison Supermarkets Plc tumbled the most in more than 14 months. Experian Plc jumped to a record after the world largest credit-checking company raised its dividend and announced a share buyback.

  • [By Victor Selva]

The Specialty Restaurant Group (SRG), which includes Bahama Breeze and The Capital Grille, has grown over the last couple of quarters. Eddie V's Restaurants and Yard House might be meaningful long-term drivers, as we think most of the growth in the next years will come from the acquisition of those restaurants.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Yet Valero and its peers have seen new challenges pop up recently. Price spreads between U.S. West Texas intermediate and European Brent crude oil have narrowed considerably in April, threatening those wide margins. That's especially bad news for HollyFrontier (NYSE: HFC  ) , Tesoro (NYSE: TSO  ) , and Valero, whose western-U.S. exposure has helped those companies benefit the most from cheap mid-continent crude supplies. Phillips 66's recent deal to transport U.S. crude by rail may look a lot less lucrative if spreads narrow further, and Valero and the rest of the industry will inevitably see profits shrink if the financial incentive to export gasoline gets smaller.

  • [By Doug Ehrman]

The boom in the production of shale oil has had an impact on the performance of various oil stocks. It has also led many to wonder why the price of gasoline has remained so high with so much additional supply. While the export of crude oil is highly limited, the export of refined product is not. This has benefited some oil stocks including refiners Tesoro (NYSE: TSO  ) and Valero (NYSE: VLO  ) -- more than others.

  • [By Robert Rapier]

Robert Rapier: The oil refiners, that's an interesting story. You really have to stay on top of oil refiners and that is not a sector that I recommend for a buy and hold investor. When I joined the Energy Strategist a year ago, that's one of the first recommendations I made, was buy the oil refiners, Valero (VLO), Tesoro (TSO).

The Retail segment sells gasoline, diesel fuel and convenience store items through company-operated retail stations and third-party branded dealers and distributors in the western United States. It operated approximately 2,200 retail stations, including approximately 595 company-operated stations under the Tesoro, Shell, ARCO and USA Gasoline brands. Investors receive a 1.8% dividend. Merrill Lynch has a $76 target, and the consensus is posted lower at $66.Tesoro closed Monday at $58.31.

Menlo Worldwide Logistics provides its services using a customer- or project-based approach when the supply-chain solution requires customer-specific transportation management, single-client warehouses, and/or single-customer technological solutions. However, Menlo Worldwide Logistics also utilizes a shared-resource, process-based approach that leverages a centralized transportation-management group, multi-client warehouses and technology to provide scalable solutions to multiple customers. Additionally, Menlo Worldwide Logistics segments its business based on customer type. On average, Con-way Truckload transports shipments more than 800 miles from origin to destination. Under its regional service offering, Con-way Truckload transports truckload shipments of less than 600 miles, including local-area service for truckload shipments of less than 100 miles.
