Sell These 5 Toxic Stocks Before the Drop

BALTIMORE (Stockpickr) -- So much for yesterday's rally. Stocks faded all afternoon on Wednesday, shedding the gains that they earned to start the session. That one-day observation wouldn't be so noteworthy if not for the fact that Mr. Market has been on repeat mode for the last several weeks.

>>5 Big Charts Ready to Break Out in May

And while stocks continue to churn sideways, the worst thing you can do is sit on your hands. That's because the market's biggest gains often don't come from picking the right stocks, they come from not owning the wrong ones. That's especially true this week.

Today I'll show you five big "toxic" names you need to unload before the next leg down.

Just to be clear, the companies I'm talking about today aren't exactly junk. By that, I mean they're not next up in line at bankruptcy court. But that's frankly irrelevant; from a technical analysis standpoint, sellers are shoving around these toxic stocks right now. For that reason, fundamental investors need to decide how long they're willing to take the pain if they want to hold onto these firms in the weeks and months ahead. And for investors looking to buy one of these positions, it makes sense to wait for more favorable technical conditions (and a lower share price) before piling in.

>>5 Stocks Under $10 Set to Soar

For the unfamiliar, technical analysis is a way for investors to quantify qualitative factors, such as investor psychology, based on a stock's price action and trends. Once the domain of cloistered trading teams on Wall Street, technicals can help top traders make consistently profitable trades and can aid fundamental investors in better planning their stock execution.

So without further ado, let's take a look at five toxic stocks you should be unloading.

General Motors

First up is General Motors (GM), a widely owned name that's done nothing but disappoint in 2014. Since the calendar flipped to January, GM has dropped 14.7%, underperforming the broad market by a big margin. And as we get deeper into May, there's reason to believe that GM is setting up for another leg down.

Charts don't get much simpler than the one in GM -- the stock is currently bouncing its way lower in a textbook downtrending channel. The setup is formed by a pair of parallel trend lines: a resistance line above shares and a support line below them. Those two lines on the chart provide traders with the high-probability range for GM's shares to stay within. When it comes to trend channels, up is good and down is bad; it's really as simple as that.

This week, as GM presses up against to the top of the channel for a fifth time, it makes sense to sell (or short) its next move lower. For investors waiting on a buying opportunity in GM, I'd recommend avoiding shares until the downtrend gets taken out. This stock could still move a lot lower before that happens.

Republic Airways Holdings

We're seeing the exact same setup right now in shares of a much smaller name: regional airline Republic Airways Holdings (RJET).

During a broad rally in the rest of the airline industry, RJET hasn't just missed the upside -- it's actually dropped close to 30% since last July. And as RJET tests trend line resistance for a fifth time over the course of this downtrend, it makes sense to sell the next bounce lower.

Waiting for that move down before clicking "sell" is a critical part of risk management, for two big reasons: It's the spot where prices are the highest within the channel, and alternatively it's the spot where you'll get the first indication that the downtrend is ending. Remember, all trend lines do eventually break, but by actually waiting for the bounce to happen first, you're ensuring that sellers are still in control before you unload shares of RJET.

Yes, waiting for the bounce means leaving some money on the table in RJET, but it greatly increases the probability that you're putting yourself on the right side of the trade.

Brunswick

The last year or so has looked a lot stronger for shares of Brunswick (BC): The diversified mid-cap has rallied more than 24% since last summer. But that rally could be coming to an end for BC in May, and it's time to think about taking gains.

That's because Brunswick is currently forming a double top, a bearish reversal pattern that looks just like it sounds. The double top is formed by a pair of swing highs that max out at approximately the same price level. The sell signal comes when the trough that separates the two highs gets violated. For BC, that breakdown level is right at $40, a price level that's getting tested this week.

If shares are still hanging out below $40 early in today's session, consider it a confirmed sell signal. Momentum, measured by 14-day RSI, provides some foreshadowing for downside in BC. While price was steady over the two tops in Brunswick, our momentum gauge failed to do the same. That's a big red flag.

Towers Watson

Towers Watson (TW) is another name that's looking "toppy" after a big run higher in the past year. Shares of TW are up more than 44% over the trailing 12 months, besting the performance of the S&P 500 nearly three times over. But that rally could be coming to a screeching halt thanks to a classic technical reversal pattern in shares. Put simply, TW looks toxic right now.

Towers Watson is currently forming a textbook head and shoulders top, a bearish reversal pattern that indicates exhaustion among buyers. The setup is formed by two swing highs that top out at approximately the same level (the shoulders), separated by a higher high (the head). The sell signal comes on a move through TW's neckline, which is currently right above $100. If TW can't catch a bid above $100, it becomes a sell.

Another indicator, relative strength (not to be confused with RSI), is the side signal that's pointing to downside in TW in May. Relative strength has been trending lower since January, indicating that TW is woefully underperforming the broad market in 2014.

It's tempting, but don't discount the head and shoulders pattern just because of its name. After all, the only thing that matters is its efficacy: a recent academic study conducted by the Federal Reserve Board of New York found that the results of 10,000 computer-simulated head-and-shoulders trades resulted in "profits [that] would have been both statistically and economically significant."

Pfizer

Hot Defensive Companies To Buy For 2016

Last up is Pfizer (PFE). The pharmaceutical giant is forming the exact same setup as the one in TW right now -- and while the chart may not be quite as pretty in PFE, the trading implications are exactly the same. Pfizer broke through its neckline at $29.50 earlier in the week. Now a pullback is giving shorts a second chance at a low-risk entry on this stock.

Why the significance at $29.50? Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to keep buyers and sellers in mind. Patterns like head and shoulders setups and double tops are a good way to quickly describe what's going on in a stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

That horizontal $29.50 neckline level in PFE is the spot where there's previously been an excess of demand for shares; in other words, it's a price where buyers have been more eager to step in and buy shares at a lower price than sellers were to sell. That's what makes a breakdown below support so significant -- the move means that sellers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess demand at the at price level.

For the best risk/reward tradeoff, wait for the next move lower before selling PFE.

Freebies for Your Lawn and Garden

After a long, harsh winter, your garden might be in desperate need of some TLC. If you received a tax refund, you might want to put that money to use sprucing up your yard to improve your home's curb appeal. But don't despair if you don't have extra cash to improve your lawn and garden. There are several freebies that can help you get the green space around your home looking great.

SEE ALSO: Fabulous Freebies 2014

Free trees. Some local governments give away trees (typically seedlings) as part of Arbor Day celebrations. National Arbor Day is the last Friday in April, but many states observe it on different days. Check your local government's Web site to find out if it is giving away trees as part of an Arbor Day celebration. And some cities offer free trees as part of other events. For example, West Sacramento, Cal., gives residents up to two free 15-gallon trees a year if they attend a workshop on tree planting and care.

Utility companies also offer customers free trees throughout the year to help reduce energy use through strategic planting, so check with yours to see if it offers such a program.

You can get ten free trees when you join the Arbor Day Foundation. Membership is $10, so the trees technically aren't free -- but it's a small amount to pay for so many trees. Plus, your membership entitles you to a 33% discount on trees when you buy online from the foundation.

Free mulch. Many cities, counties and utility companies offer residents free mulch made from recycled leaves or wood from tree trimmings and tree removals if you pick it up. Some actually deliver the mulch for free.

Free seeds. The National Gardening Association has a seed swap forum that allows people to find seeds they want or share extra seeds with others. Fill out an online swap form to specify the seeds you want, then the association will contact you when someone can provide those seeds. Ideally, it should be a two-way exchange, but you don't have to have seeds to swap in order to receive some.

Free fertilizer. Americans spend $5.25 billion on fertilizers for their lawns, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Yet, you can get fertilizer for free by composting leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps and other organic waste. See the Eartheasy.com guide to composting to learn more.

Free gardening advice. You don't have to spend a lot of money on gardening guides when you can get information for free from your local cooperative extension office. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has an interactive map that can help you find the office closest to you.

Free tools. Some cities have tool lending libraries that let residents borrow a variety of tools -- including garden tools -- for free. Check this list to see if there's one near you, but note that some of these libraries require a membership fee. Or you can check Freecylce.org -- a nonprofit network of people offering items they no longer want for free -- to see if anyone in your community is giving away garden tools.

Time to Make a Bet in the Leading Automaker of the World?

On Dec. 31, Donald Smith (Trades, Portfolio) added Toyota Motor Corporation (TM) at an average price between $118.61 and $131.65 and currently holds 440,684 shares of the stock with a current value of $50 million in his portfolio. It was the second time he made a move in this stock, in June he reduced the position and at the end of the year he increased it. So let's take a look at this company and try to explain to investors the reasons this is an apparently appealing investment opportunity.

Geographic Progress

The company is engaged in the design, manufacture, and sale of sedans, minivans, compact cars, sport-utility vehicles, trucks and related parts and accessories throughout the world. Toyota's principal business segments are automotive operations, financial services operations and other operations. The company sells its vehicles in approximately 170 countries and regions, and markets for its automobiles in Japan, North America, Europe and Asia.

Top Airline Companies To Own In Right Now

The company´s focus is to boost its sales on the emerging markets (specifically Asia) with the introduction of eight compact car models into Brazil, China, India and Indonesia by 2015. At that time, the company wants to sell more than 1 million vehicles in over 100 countries. Toyota's manufacturing expertise will be implemented in those countries, searching for low costs. We have to mention that it is planning to double its production capacity in Russia and production capacity in Argentine.

R&D Efforts

The company has concentrated on a plan to launch a fuel cell vehicle, which runs on hydrogen to produce electricity, by 2015. At that time it also plans to launch 21 gas-electric hybrid models. Another contribution to the company´s strategy is to give more power to regional design centers in order to make cars for specifics markets.

Analyst Recommendation

Its fourth-quarter 2013 earnings per share surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate. The firm is currently Zacks Rank # 3 - Hold, and it also has a longer-term recommendation of "Neutral"

Relative Valuation

In terms of valuation, the stock sells at a trailing P/E of 10.1x, trading at a discount compared to an average of 15.6x for the industry. To use another metric, its price-to-book ratio of 1.3x indicates also a discount versus the industry average of 1.42x and the price-to-sales ratio of 0.8x is above the industry average of 0.6x. The first two metrics indicate that the stock is relatively undervalued relative to its peers.

Earnings per share (EPS) increased in the most recent quarter compared to the same quarter a year ago. It has demonstrated a positive trend over the past five years. In the next graph we include the stock price because EPS often lead the stock price movement.

1392922422632.png

Finally, I always like to see one of the most important financial ratios applying to stockholders, the best measure of performance for a firm's management: the return on equity. The ratio has increased when compared to its ROE from the same quarter one year prior. Let´s compare it with competitors in the next table:

Ticker

Company Name

ROE (%)

TM

Toyota

7,9

F

Ford

35,5

HMC

Honda Motor

7,3

As we can see, Honda Motor Co (HMC) has a lower ROE than Toyota. But for those seeking for a great ROE, the option should be Ford (F).

Final Comment

The firm´s revenues rose more than 14% from the same quarter one year prior. This growth seems to boost the EPS as we have seen. Moreover, Net income and net operating cash flow increased as well, demonstrating the improvement of the company´s strength.

I would recommend investors to consider adding the stock for their long-term portfolios. Hedge fund gurus have also been active in the company in Q4 2013. Louis Moore Bacon (Trades, Portfolio), Sarah Ketterer (Trades, Portfolio), Jim Simons (Trades, Portfolio), John Rogers (Trades, Portfolio) and Ken Fisher (Trades, Portfolio) have also invested in it.

    5) Mobile Device entry will pay off - Microsoft has introduced both hardware and software products for the mobile industry. The company has launched Windows tablets based on both ARM (ARMH) and Intel (INTC) processors. The company has also made its Windows 8 much more mobile friendly with a totally new interface (Live Tiles). The company has also partnered with the world's second largest mobile seller Nokia (NOK) so that Nokia smartphones will only use Windows operating system. PC vendors like Acer, Lenovo etc. have also introduced new products like the PC-tablet hybrids which make use of the new Windows 8 operating system. The new "Windows Blue" operating system will go further in making Windows more tablet/smartphone friendly and it is rumored that it will unite the mobile and PC versions of the Windows OS. IDC expects that Microsoft will capture a ~10% market share of the tablet operating system segment by 2017 (up from almost 0% now).

In this series, I'm assessing the boardrooms of companies within the FTSE 100. I hope to separate the management teams that are worth following from those that are not. Today I am looking atARM Holdings (LSE: ARM  ) (NASDAQ: ARMH  ) , whose chips are in 95% of the world's smartphones.

A long ! and windi! ng road
This search is why I'd previously invested in ARM Holdings (NASDAQ: ARMH  ) , only to sell (prematurely in hindsight) due to concerns about monetization. I had doubts that ARM's role in the value chain was as envious as I initially thought, and subsequently redeployed my investing dollars into Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM  ) , an ARM licensee with a stranglehold on licensing, cellular basebands, and mobile applications processors (three for the price of one!). Qualcomm also has deep ties with Samsung, giving it exposure to the top smartphone makers in the world. No regrets there so far.

Take the case of ARM Holdings plc (ADR) (Nasdaq: ARMH). It's a semiconductor firm that designs chips for mobile products like smartphones and tablet computers.

Top 10 Managed Healthcare Companies To Invest In 2015

By Christine Benz

Here your assignment: Gather up all of your retirement accounts and shape them into a portfolio that will supply you with the income youl need during your retirement years.

Oh, and one other tiny to-do: Youl  also need to make sure you never run out of money, even though you don know exactly how long youl need it.

In the past, one simple and elegant solution to the above problem was to buy an immediate annuity that would pay you a stream of income for the rest of your life. But many investors don like the loss of control that accompanies annuities. A more temporal problem is that today ultra-low interest rates mean payouts from such annuities are lousy right now.

One other intuitively appealing idea is to sink your portfolio into income-producing investments, such as bonds and dividend-paying stocks, and live off whatever yield they generate. That way you might never have to tap your principal at all. The big drawback, however, is that youe buffeted around by whatever the interest-rate gods serve up. When yields are up, youe living high off the hog; when theye miserly, as they have been for the better part of a decade, you have the unappetizing choice of scaling your spending way back or venturing into riskier income-producing securities to get the yield you need.

What do Chelsea Therapeutics International Ltd. (NASDAQ:CHTP), National Bank of Greece (NYSE:NBG), and Walter Energy, Inc. (NYSE:WLT) have in common. They all have charts worth a much closer look right now. That's not to say they're all dropping the same bullish hint. In fact, WLT, NBG, and CHTP are all dropping distinctly-different hints as to their likely near-term future. But, trading action is trading action no matter which direction it's in. Take a look.

Yes: Truth be told, shares of the National Bank of Greece have been working on a rally for a while. It's only been recently, however, that NBG has made it clear it's not going to give up. The stock crossed above the 100-day moving average line (gray) early in the month, and has continued to peel away. Yes, National Bank of Greece hit something of a soft patch last week, but the 20-day moving average line (blue) has since stepped up to the plate as a technical floor, rekindling the uptrend yesterday day and today. Perhaps most bullish of all is the fact that NBG has started to increase volume on the way up, after it cleared the 100-day moving average line,

With gross margins of just 1% to 3%, Trina isn't faring as badly as peer ReneSola (NYSE: SOL  ) , which posted negative gross margins in its quarterly report earlier this month. One under-$10 name that's starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is ReneSola (SOL), a manufacturer of solar wafers and producer of solar power products based in China. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up sharply by 183%.

If you take a look at the chart for ReneSola, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending very strong for the last four months and change, with shares soaring higher from its low of $1.25 to its recent high of $4.85 a share. During that uptrend, shares of SOL have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. Shares of SOL have pulled back a bit during the last few weeks, with the stock coming off that high of $4.85 to its recent low of $3.52 a share. This stock has now started to bounce off that $3.52 low and it's quickly moving within range of triggering a big breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SOL if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $4.25 to $4.50 a share and then once it clears its 52-week high at $4.85 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 2.09 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then SOL will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $7 to $8 a share.

Traders can look to buy SOL off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average of $3.31 a share. One can also buy SOL off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

While Medicare in the US primarily funds care for those over the age of 65, in Australia the identically named “Medicare” program provides universal care for almost all Australians.

Australian Medicare is facing many of the same challenges of American Medicare as the population ages in the Land Down Under. Australia’s Productivity Commission, an independent governmental research and advisory group, recently estimated that by 2060 caring for the nation’s elderly will cost the country about 6 percent of gross domestic product (GDP). That forecast is based on the commission’s estimate that the number of Australians age 75 or older will increase by 4 million by 2060, with 25 centenarians for every 100 babies born.

At the same time, the country’s population grew by 1.6 percent last year and has averaged better than 1 percent growth over the last four decades. In fact, because of the country’s birth rate and immigration, it is now growing more rapidly than either India (1.3 percent population growth) or China (0.5 percent).

    2. Gimme those car keys
Sniff ... they grow up so fast. Before we know it, little Georgie's going to be ready to sit his royal tuckus in the driver seat. Tata Motors (NYSE: TTM  ) offers a flashback to the days of British colonialism, although this time it's India with the ownership. Although the South Asian automaker is most famous for its Tata Nano, the world's cheapest car, Prince George would probably have his eyes set on Tata's Jaguar Land Rover subsidiary.

  • [By Bram de Haas]

Trading at a P/E (TTM) of 16 the company is not cheap at first glance, yet given all the information indicating significant earnings growth in 2013 the multiple of 16 becomes much less threatening. There is also the book value of about $10 / share and the recent offer by Landry of $22 a share to add some insurance on the downside. Given current earnings the valuation may be in line, but given the prospects of earnings increasing significantly, the stock is worth more.

The rise of VW could hit GM particularly hard, both in terms of reputation and in earnings. GM said it was looking to introduce four new Chevrolet models in China next year, as well as to expand its low-cost Baojun brand. Chinese buyers could already be looking elsewhere though, given the rise of VW and of Tata Motors Ltd. (NYSE: TTM), which sells cars under the Jaguar and Range Rover brands. Sales of Tata vehicles have risen sharply in the past year, and the company is set to begin producing cars in China.

Hot Industrial Conglomerate Companies To Own For 2015

Search Jim Cramer's "Mad Money" trading recommendations using our exclusive "Mad Money" Stock Screener.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- This is what a bull market is supposed to look like, Jim Cramer proclaimed on Mad Money Tuesday after a strong showing on Wall Street. Cramer said a bull market isn't supposed to be a walk in the park, it's supposed to transcend negativity -- which is exactly what this market has finally been able to do.

Cramer said he actually likes when the high-profile bulls start getting "cautious" and begin predicting a big correction. That's the time when all of the weaker holders get shaken out, he said, leaving only the true believers to march the markets market even higher.

Every bull market needs leadership from the transports, Cramer continued, and that was also on display today with UPS (UPS) and FedEx (FDX) on the move. Cramer said investors need to pick up some American Airlines (AAL). Bull markets also need strong retail, but investors shouldn't take their cues from Wal-Mart (WMT) and Target (TGT), two big disappointments this quarter. Instead, focus on the dollar and the drug stores, which are taking share. Also on the mend: high-end retail including Tiffany (TIF) and Michael Kors (KORS). Even the high-growth stocks were able to post a rally with Workday (WDAY) ending higher. Cramer said he likes Seattle Genetics (SGEN) and ISIS Pharmaceuticals (ISIS) to name a few. Finally, don't forget the oil drillers such as EOG Resources (EOG) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD), Cramer concluded. This rally is legitimate, and investors need to be taking advantage of it. Off the Charts In the "Off The Charts" segment, Cramer went head to head with colleague Mark Sebastian over the chart of CBOE Volatility Index, commonly known by its ticker, the (VIX.X), to see where the markets might be headed next. Using a chart of the S&P 500 and the VIX, Sebastian noted the VIX is now at its lowest level since 2008, which bodes well for the markets, as a low VIX led to a nice rally for the markets from 2002 through 2007.

Top Wireless Telecom Stocks To Buy Right Now

It might seem odd to use one of GuruFocusBen Graham: Net-Net Newsletter (very) few successes as an example of why net-net investing is so hard. But that what I going to do today.

I picked GTSI (GTSI) for the Ben Graham: Net-Net Newsletter in June of last year. The model portfolio bought 128 shares of GTSI at $5.02 a share. It also paid a $7 commission which spread over the 128 shares bought in the account works out to a total cost of $5.07 a share.

The purchase of real GTSI shares was made in a real brokerage account after the newsletter issue picking the stock came out. So, that isn the problem with net-net investing. Anyone who read the newsletter coulde bought GTSI shares. And they wouldn have had to pay any more than $5.07 a share including commissions. In fact, because the model portfolio made such a small purchase the per share cost would probably be lower for most investors. And GTSI spent a lot of time under that $5.07 total cost shown in the model portfolio. In fact, investors had plenty of opportunities to buy GTSI after the newsletter came out at prices between $4.00 and $5.00 a share. The lowest price shown in the last 52 weeks is $3.82 a share. You probably couldn have gotten anything like that. But no one woulde had any trouble buying shares at around $4.50 quite regularly if you kept faith in the stock.
