Top Investments For 2016

Top Investments For 2016: Northern Oil and Gas Inc.(NOG)

Northern Oil and Gas, Inc., an independent energy company, engages in the acquisition, exploration, exploitation, development, and production of crude oil and natural gas properties in the Williston Basin Bakken play, the United States. As of June 30, 2011, the company?s principal assets included approximately 158,046 net acres located in the northern region of the United States; and 439 gross wells. Northern Oil and Gas, Inc. is based in Wayzata, Minnesota.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Sean Williams]

    Northern (under)exposure
No one ever said being an oil and gas driller was easy. Costs to build out a company, drill, and hire a workforce are huge, and if spot oil, liquid natural gas, and natural gas prices don't cooperate relatively quickly, then the chances of success can be quite low. However, I think the market isn't giving nearly enough credit to small-time Bakken shale player Northern Oil & Gas (NYSEMKT: NOG  ) , which has all the tools essential for long-term profits.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

    4. Northern Oil & Gas (NYSEMKT: NOG  )
Bakken-focused Northern Oil & Gas delivered oil production growth of 93.4% last year. The company spent about $485 million to drill a total of 48.3 net wells, which delivered that production growth. What's unique about Northern is that it typically just takes a small, non-operated stake in each well, as the company actually participated in the drilling of 563 gross wells last year. That spreads its risk, as one dry hole won't have much of an impact on its returns. The company plans to continue to grow its oil production this year, as it's currently working with its partners to drill 152 gross (12.2 net) wells to keep oil production growing.

Lloyds has several catalysts working in its favor. The bank has been busily disposing of assets that it views as non-core — the latest being a $1.45 billion ($1.37 billion U.S.) disposition of Australian operations to Aussie banking giant Westpac (WBK). In addition, Lloyds said it hopes to pay out as much as 70% of earnings as a dividend by 2016, which! as a hig! h-yield editor, has my full attention. This puts shares on a prospective yield for 2016 of more than 7% if earnings come in as projected.

More than a handful of international companies had strong performances over the past year. Australia-based Westpac Banking (NYSE: WBK  ) , for example, soared 54% -- and still yields a fat 5.4%. It's been hampered, though, by the slowdown in China, as China uses many commodities produced by Australia. Some worry about a housing slowdown hurting the company, too.

Tohoku Electric Power Co. surged 22 percent, leading power companies to the biggest advance on Japan Topix index. Korea Electric Power Corp. Further, it holds a 50% controlling interest in the limited liability company that operates Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Boyd Gaming Corporation was founded in 1988 and is headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One gaming player that's rapidly moving within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Boyd Gaming (BYD), which owns and operates gaming entertainment facilities located in Nevada, Mississippi, Illinois, Louisiana and Indiana. This stock has been blazing a trail to the upside so far in 2013, with shares up sharply by 115%.

If you look at the chart for Boyd Gaming, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong over the last month and change, with shares moving sharply higher from its low of $11.27 to its intraday high of $14.38 a share. During that move, shares of BYD have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of BYD into breakout territory above resistance at $13.79 a share, and it's quickly pushing the stock within range of another big breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in BYD if it manages to break out above its 52-week high at $14.50 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 2.34 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then BYD will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move are $18 to $20 a share.

Traders can look to buy BYD off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some near-term support at $13 a share. One can also buy BYD off strength once it takes out $14.50 a share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

PRAA Raised to Outperform - Analyst Blog

Top Cheapest Companies To Own In Right Now

On Jul 12, 2013, we upgraded Portfolio Recovery Associates Inc. (PRAA) to Outperform based on its efforts to diversify product portfolio, strong cash collections, and improving bottom line.

Why the Upgrade?

Portfolio Recovery reported positive earnings surprise in the last 4 quarters, with an average beat of 8.28%. We expect this Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) company to outperform estimates in the second quarter of 2013 as well. Currently, the Zacks Consensus Estimate for Portfolio Recovery's second-quarter earnings stands at $2.24 per share, up 20% over the year-ago quarter.

Portfolio Recovery's bottom-line results have shown great improvement over the recent past. The escalation is attributable to strong improvement in income from finance receivables and fee income, which managed to offset the rising expenses.

Moreover, Portfolio Recovery has expanded beyond its primary debt collection business into government collections, audit services and claims settlement with the acquisitions of IGS Nevada, Alatax, Broussard Partners, MuniServices, Claims Compensation Bureau and Mackenzie Hall. This diversification has helped the company in mitigating some of the stress on collections caused by the recent economic softness, while continuing to add to earnings.

Further, Portfolio Recovery's cash collections and collector productivity (cash collections per hour paid) continue to be at record highs as efficiency improves at the company's operating call centers and Portfolio Recovery continues to hire new collectors. Cash collections jumped 26.4% year over year to $275.5 million during the first quarter of 2013.

He concluded by saying: e remain confident that our previously stated long-term 40% to 50% annual organic revenue growth goal is achievable again in 2014.Wall Street opinion is mixed, with Weston Twigg, an analyst at Pacific Crest Securities, writing in a research note:

Pfizer Net Income Growth Is Increasing Leading to Increase in Its Operating Margins

Net incomes and operating margins of a company give some insights into its financial health. Pfizer net income growth has accelerated this year. In fact, when compared with its direct competitors like Merck, Novartis, and Sanofi, the rate of increase of net income growth trailing twelve months (TTM) is greatest at Pfizer with $10.68 billion followed by Novartis with $9.37 billion while Merck and Sanofi lagged behind with $4.53 billion and $4.05 billion respectively. Really, rather than increasing, there has been a decrease in Merck and Sanofi net incomes this year which should be a source of concern for investors. A healthy operating margin shows that a company is earning more per dollar of sales and, hence, able to pay for its fixed costs including interest on debt.

That helps explain why Accenture and IBM,the industry's two biggest players, have been able to gobble up so much market share. But there's a second tier of technology-consultants -- in terms of sheer size -- as well. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Sean Williams]

    This week's winner
After tumbling by double digits last week, trucking company Arkansas Best (NASDAQ: ABFS  ) tacked on 14.6% to take the top spot this week. Shares rallied after the company announced a regular $0.03 quarterly cash dividend on Tuesday, payable to shareholders on May 21. Following stronger-than-expected results from many trucking companies, I feel quite confident that once Arkansas Best solves its union issues, it'll be pedal to the metal.

  • [By Sean Williams]

Even the trucking companies that have been struggling are showing signs of life. Just last week, Arkansas Best (NASDAQ: ABFS  ) announced a tentative agreement between its ABF Freight Systems subsidiary and the Teamsters union that should dramatically lower costs. Just days later, struggling trucker YRC Worldwide (NASDAQ: YRCW  ) , which also reported its first quarterly profit in six years recently, confirmed that it's offered a preliminary proposal to acquire Arkansas Best.

The Fed Is Losing Control

It's been a rough six weeks for bond investors.   Since hitting a low of 2.8% in early May, the yield on the 30-year U.S. Treasury bond has spiked higher to more than 3.3%.   And as interest rates go up, bond prices fall...   You can see the effect in the iShares Barclays 20+ Year Treasury Bond Fund (TLT)...     TLT is down more than 9% in just the past month and a half. It's now trading at its lowest price in the past year.    And as rough as it has been for bond investors, the Fed is suffering worse. You see, for more than four years now, the Fed – through its multiple quantitative easing programs – has been the world's biggest buyer of Treasury bonds. So now with interest rates on the rise, the Fed is underwater on all of the purchases it made over the past year.   Not only is the Fed printing money to buy up U.S. Treasury debt – a stupid thing to do anyway – it's now losing money on the bonds it bought.   And by the look of the following chart, it may be about to get much worse...     Since last August, rates have been steadily working higher in a series of higher highs and higher lows. That's a rising-channel pattern (the blue lines)... and it's the definition of an uptrend.   The chart is now approaching resistance at about 3.5% (the first red line). The previous two times it touched that line occurred when rates were in a downtrend and momentum was working in favor of lower rates. The resistance line held and prevented interest rates from rising more.   Today, the momentum is in favor of higher rates. The chart might not break through resistance on this current attempt since it's already extended. But if the chart pulls back and forms another higher high, rates will likely break out to the upside on the next rally attempt.   The next resistance level is all the way up around 4.4%. At that point, the Fed will be losing money on most of the bonds it purchased over the past four years. That's not a good track record.   I suspect Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke will do everything in his power to keep rates from rising. So don't look for any tapering of quantitative easing any time soon... no matter what Bernanke says.   But in the end, the market is just too big to control. Maybe that's what the action over the past six weeks is trying to tell us.   – Jeff Clark

Yesterday, stocks overcame early weakness to finish in positive territory. Today, they’ll have their work cut out for them if they’re to repeat the feat, thanks to big drops in Caterpillar (CAT), United Technologies (UTX) and retailer likes TJX Companies (TJX), BestBuy (BBY) and L Brands (LB).

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Monday marked the end of the second quarter, and the Dow Jones Industrials (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) failed to rise to the occasion, falling 25 points. The Dow has had a fairly flat performance so far in 2014, gaining just over 1% and making many investors question whether the bull market has the staying power it would need to provide the sixth-straight year of positive returns for the Dow. Yet even amid the lackluster gains for the Dow overall, Intel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) and Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) have helped the Dow avoid losses for the year, with each of the Dow components gaining more than 20% in the first half. Let's take a closer look at how they did it.

  • [By Patricio Kehoe]

The concept of diversity, when talking about a companys activities, is a sword with two edges. When performance hits the fan, diversity can turn into an advantage as only one segment can be affected. However, diversification can curtail winnings during a moment of bonanza. In other words, a company with five segments will see a relative smaller impact in overall performance than a company with activities in a single segment, when that segment experiences an abnormal growth. Hence, with a recovering construction market in the US and declining prices for mined commodities, a comparison between Caterpillar (CAT) and Terex (TER) is all the more relevant.

  • [By Matt Thalman]

Share of Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) rose 2.51% this afternoon, making it the best-performing Dow component of the day. My colleague Dan Dzombak explained why ! lowering ! interest rates in Australia gave the stock such a boost this morning. The long and skinny of it is that Caterpillar receives about 10% of its revenue from the country and the lower rates should help spur construction in the country and thus boost sales for the heavy machinery manufacturer.

Once again, rather than making a wish on burning match bets, I prefer to buy out of favor companies at a steep discount to their asset and business value. And alook at the silver miners shows deep discounts to the value of corporate assets that could lead to significant profits.

Pan American Silver (PAAS) trades at just 65% of book value and has fallen by about 75% over the past few years. Couer Mines (CDE) is fetching just 54% of book and has fallen by around 80% since 2006. Silver Standard Resources (SSRI) trades at 55% of book and for less than the value of the cash the company has in the bank.

In reality, silver just needs to stop falling in price for these stocks to start to recover. If the analysts are right and silver hits a new high in the next decade, these could easily be the best investments you ever make in your lifetime.

It turns out that Taseko Mines' loss is silver-and-gold miner Coeur d' Alene Mines' (NYSE: CDE  ) gain, in terms of a CFO.

Earlier this week, Taseko announced that its chief financial officer, Peter C. Mitchell, was leaving for a company it did not identify. On Wednesday, we learned the identity of the company when Coeur d' Alene announced Mitchell will become its own new CFO. Coeur had been without a CFO since Frank Hanagarne was promoted out of the office back in February to take over as the company's chief operating officer.

Right now I know that silver miners like Pan American Silver (PAAS) and Coeur Mining (CDE) are very cheap on an asset basis. I know that small banks like Cape Bancorp (CBNJ) and Essa Bancorp (ESSA) are crazy-cheap — and if the world does not end, those stocks will be a lot higher in a few years.

While the number of merchants who take Bitcoin is growing, actually finding a merchant who accepts Bitcoin hasn't been especially easy. Until now.

In a quiet announcement last week, Yelp Inc. (NYSE: YELP) said it had added a line for "who accepts Bitcoin" to its guide data. Yelp provides online data and reviews for about 53 million local businesses.

This development is a much bigger deal than it seems. With a major-name company like Yelp providing an easy way to find who accepts Bitcoin, it's a big piece of the infrastructure needed to make actually using Bitcoin more practical. And that will speed adoption of the digital currency.

It also doesn't hurt that Yelp draws plenty of eyeballs.

Consider that the Yelp.com website had 100 million unique visitors in January; the mobile app gets about 9.4 million unique visitors each month. Many smartphone users keep the free app handy to check out area restaurants and other businesses while on the go.

AP/Jae C. Hong For all the talk about drones replacing parcel carriers or self-driving cars disrupting the taxi industry, there's a bigger tech revolution happening in the restaurant industry right now that may displace workers far sooner than anything futurists foresee in those other industries. The arrival of tablets and smartphone apps that detail menu items, take orders, and let you settle up your tab at the en of the meal will be a big theme among casual dining chains and even a few independent foodie haunts this year. Brinker International's (EAT) Chili's, DineEquity's (DIN) Applebee's, and a handful of San Francisco fine dining establishments are leading the push to add the technology, which will make waiters and waitresses less necessary. None of the chains have said that these tech initiatives will lead them to reduce waitstaff headcount -- but it doesn't take a lot of foresight to connect the dots. If folks are using table-side tablets to place orders and ask for drink refills, or firing up a smartphone app to pay at the end of a meal, that naturally translates into fewer front-of-house employees needed to keep an eatery going. Order Up In fact, some industry leaders outright deny that mobile tech will displace staff. "This really isn't a labor play," DineEquity CEO Julia Stewart said on CNBC late last year, explaining Applebee's move to deploy 100,000 tablets this year -- one at every table. "It's not about saving labor. This is really about creating an opportunity to talk to our guest, have an interactive conversation with our guest, and give our guest a lot more opportunities." At first, a waitstaff will be instrumental in assisting customers as they use the tablets to place orders or pay their bills. There will also be patrons who are apprehensive about embracing the technology, and Applebee's will still have waiters taking orders the old-fashioned way for people who prefer talking to a person. Chili's is going with a less-comprehensive table

Darden did its best to put a bright face on the numbers. CEO Clarence Otis took pains to point out that at least Darden's same-restaurant sales are growing, and "well above industry average" this quarter. He's right about that. Mark Lennihan/APJack Ma is the founder of Alibaba. There has been no shortage of debutantes on Wall Street lately. Dozens of companies went public last quarter -- many of them names you know, or that you will know soon. These some of the more intriguing initial public offerings to come out of this past quarter. El Pollo Loco (LOCO) Fast casual has been the place to be for investing in the restaurant industry, and that helped pave the way for this California-based chain specializing in citrus-marinated chicken to go public in July at $15 a share. Investors won't be impressed by its slow yet calculated expansion. It had grown from 398 locations to just 401 in the year leading up to its IPO. However, El Pollo Loco's store-level performance has been impressive. It posted a 5.4 percent increase in comparable-restaurant sales in its first quarter as a public company. That is certainly better than the average fast-food or casual-dining chain out there, once again validating the fast-casual model, where chains offer the convenience of fast food but the quality of traditional casual-dining restaurants. Mobileye (MBLY) The push to develop self-driving cars is really getting traction, a fact that became even more apparent last week when Tesla (TSLA) showed off an updated sedan that uses a dozen sensors to do everything from adjusting speed in accordance with speed limit signs when it's on cruise control to switching lanes automatically when the sensors see an opening in traffic after the driver triggers the turn signal. But clever sensors notwithstanding, self-driving cars won't happen without serious software, and that's where Mobileye comes in. The Israeli company provides software and chips for camera-based advanced driver assistance systems. This will likely become a competitive market in the future, but for now Mobileye is seen as a leading pioneer in self-driving vehicles. Its share price has roughly doubled since it went public at $25 just two months ago. Re

christianz1969/Flickr Americans lately have been transferring their love of fast-casual restaurant food to stocks of companies in the segment. Late last month, "better burger" specialist The Habit Restaurants (HABT) launched an initial public offering that doubled in price within hours of hitting the market. Like a meal from one of The Habit's more traditional fast-food rivals, though, the feeling of satisfaction didn't last: The shares started to drop after the initial euphoria. But that isn't stopping other fast-casual operators from listing on the exchange. They're finding, though, what works in the kitchen isn't necessarily successful on the market. IPOh Yes IPOs of fast-casual chain operators are coming to the market faster than you can get a refill at a soda machine. This year alone has seen the market debut not only of The Habit, but also the Mediterranean-flavored Zoe's Kitchen (ZOES) and West Coast chicken griller El Pollo Loco Holdings (LOCO), among others. Like The Habit, the stocks of the latter two saw impressive first-day rises (although they didn't pop quite as high as those of the burger purveyor). Why the excitement? Some of it can certainly be ascribed to the IPO market itself, which has had a frothy year. As of this writing, 262 companies have gone public, a 25 percent rise over the same period of 2013. In terms of total proceeds from IPOs, 2014 is set to be the best year for at least the past decade. Building a Better Burrito But likely a bigger factor is that the fast-casual segment has one great model that investors are hoping the newcomers can at least partially replicate -- Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG). Recently giant food conglomerate, Cargill announced it had partnered with the Swiss biosynthetic pharmaceutical company, Evolva (EVE:SW), to develop a more consistent and less expensive stevia sweetener via Evolva microbial fermentation-based process. This is big news for the future of stevia because a microbial fermentation-based process does not have to rely on soil conditions or weather, and stevia can be manufactured anywhere, thus having the potential of guaranteeing an endless supply line of stevia. Through the microbial fermentation, the manufacturer has the capability to process the key sweet individual components of stevia using low-cost plant sugars, and allows for the individual components of stevia, regardless of how minute, to be developed creating blends in any volume, which then could open the door for these manufacturers to fine-tune its stevia to local tastes. But what would be most attractive is that, because the fermentation process does not require the entire plant, the method could conceivably shave upwards of 70% off the cost of producing stevia extracts.

www.elpolloloco.com One of this year's hottest initial public offerings is a quick-service restaurant chain that prides itself on its grilled citrus-marinated chicken. El Pollo Loco (LOCO) has seen its stock more than double since it went public at $15 in July. The California-based eatery had its first chance to impress investors with its first quarterly report as a public company on Thursday. It didn't disappoint. Sales inched 6.3 percent higher to $86.9 million, fueled primarily by a 5.4 percent increase in system-wide comparable-restaurant sales. Adjusted earnings climbed 10 percent to $6.1 million -- or 16 cents a share. The results were in line with analyst targets of 16 cents a share in net income on $86.4 million in sales. This isn't the kind of monster growth that investors associate with stocks that double within two months of storming out of the IPO gate, but El Pollo Loco now has the ammo to begin expanding its reach beyond the 401 locations open at the end of June. For investors, El Pollo Loco offers an opportunity to cash in on the fast-casual trend that's been faring better than traditional fast-food chains or casual-dining establishments. Spreading Its Wings Going public has its challenges. It forces companies to live up to Wall Street's quarterly expectations, and that can often get in the way of carrying out long-term growth plans. However, trading publicly gives a company the ability to tap equity markets to raise capital. It also helps validate brands, and that's a pretty big deal for a consumer-facing restaurant operator that relies on third-party franchisees to help build out its empire. A majority of its eateries -- 233 locations, or 58 percent -- are owned and operated by franchisees. Expansion has been slow until now. El Pollo Loco had 347 locations when it originally tried but ultimately failed to go public in 2006. Growing your store count by 16 percent through eight years isn't very impressive. El Pollo Loco had 398 restauran

Aram Boghosian/The Boston Globe/Getty Images The next hot restaurant initial public offering could be a company that wouldn't mind playing games with you. Dave & Buster's -- the chain of gargantuan restaurants with enclosed arcades and game rooms -- filed to go public earlier this month. If everything goes as planned, it will begin trading later this year under the ticker symbol PLAY on the Nasdaq exchange. There's more to Dave & Buster's than a D&B logo on the outside and a group of adults reliving their childhood at the video game arcade on the inside. Let's go over several of the reasons you may want to consider buying into the upcoming IPO. 1. Dave & Buster's Is Growing Quickly One thing to watch for in assessing eatery IPOs is to make sure that they're not going public as an exit strategy. Investors were burned last year by chasing the once-hot IPOs of sandwich baker Potbelly (PBPB) and pasta tosser Noodles & Co. (NDLS) while store-level popularity was actually peaking. Growth is accelerating at Dave & Buster's. Revenue may have inched just 5 percent higher last year, but sales have soared nearly 17 percent through the first half of this fiscal year. 2. It's Been Here Before This isn't the first time that Dave & Buster's will be a publicly traded company. Investors were able to bet on the company's success until it was taken private by Wellspring Capital Management in 2006. It was then sold to Oak Hill Capital Partners four years later in a $570 million transaction, and now that firm is taking it public. This may not seem like much of a selling point. Some will argue that it reveals a tendency to quit. However, it can also be viewed as a company that is already used to the market's quarterly expectations, with the experience to navigate through Wall Street's fickle tastemakers. 3. Dave & Buster's Offers Diversity From Volatile Food Prices One of the biggest potential setbacks for a restaurant operator is the volatil

christianz1969/Flickr Americans lately have been transferring their love of fast-casual restaurant food to stocks of companies in the segment. Since going public in 2006, the stock of the now-ubiquitous chain has gone through the roof. Its IPO was priced at $22 a share and doubled in its first day of trading. Since then, its shares have ballooned -- at the moment, they trade at nearly $660, for a hard-to-believe 2,900-plus-percent rise from the issue price. It's not t
