Top 10 Airline Companies To Watch For 2014

“Women are not a niche.”

More and more industry insiders are repeating that simple, yet critical, phrase. Pershing Advisor Solutions president (and ThinkAdvisor contributor) Mark Tibergien wrote a white paper and accompanying column in Investment Advisor on the subject last year. Sallie Krawcheck made it the subject of her presentation at the Envestnet conference in May. Despite the high-profile pleas, too many advisors still treat women as just another target market, akin to physicians or airline pilots.

Yet how can a demographic that accounts for more than 50% of the planet’s population be a niche?

“You would never think of marketing to men as a niche,” Jane Newton says. The JPMorgan alum, currently a partner and wealth advisor at RegentAtlantic Capital, doesn’t claim to be an expert on women, “but I am an expert with the issues of women on Wall Street,” and she’s knocking down some of the more common, and obtuse, stereotypes that advisors hold when looking to attract more female clients.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Nickey Friedman]

There are three basic things investors in any stock want to see: more revenue, lower costs, and more cash returned to shareholders. In the case of United Continental Holdings (NYSE: UAL  ) , shareholders are spoiled with all three. Each of these figures has been going in the right direction recently, and if the company's forecasts are accurate, all three will improve and could lead to an even higher share price.

  • [By Adam Levine-Weinberg]

    "Traditional" airlines
United Continental (NYSE: UAL  ) definitely fits Buffett's description of a bad business. In 2012, the company lost money; even if you exclude merger and integration expenses, United posted a meager pre-tax profit margin of 1.5%. Moreover, the company is in the midst of a capital expenditures binge. United's management may be right that they are making necessary investments in the business. However, the extent of these investments should give investors pause. As I wrote last month, United has more than $15 billion in CapEx commitments over the next seven years, and is likely to spend nearly $20 billion in total CapEx during that time period (an average of nearly $3 billion/year). By contrast, operating cash flow -- money that could be used to pay for capex -- was only $2.4 billion in 2011, the best year United has had since its merger with Continental.

As you've probably heard by now, inspections centering on a Honeywell (NYSE: HON  ) -manufactured emergency transmitter, that may or may not have been related to a fire aboard an Ethiopian Airlines-operated 787 two weeks ago, have revealed multiple instances of "wiring damage" aboard 787s in the service of airlines ANA and United Continental (NYSE: UAL  ) . This news -- part of a litany of woes involving Boeing planes these past few weeks -- helped to shave 1.3% off Boeing's share price over the course of the week.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By El Torero]

The airline will undoubtedly pounce on the likely failings of rival companies, though this is also an area where easyJet will be eager to move in. Spanair is gone as is Malev Zrt, two former Ryanair rivals. Air France-KLM (AFLYY.PK) and Iberia are in trouble, among other European airlines. Ryanair will take advantage of such weaknesses in its aim of becoming Europe's out-and-out dominant short-haul carrier. As other airlines cut routes, airports are now looking to Ryanair to take up the newly available airport space. As a result of this, with "opportunities opening up in Germany, Scandinavia and Central Europe" in particular, Ryanair's deputy chief executive, Howard Millar sees the Irish company increase its market share from 15 percent to 20 percent before the end of the decade.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Eric Volkman]

US Airways (NYSE: LCC  ) notched an all-time high in one of its key metrics for the month of May. The company said its load factor (i.e., the average passenger "occupancy" of its planes) increased to 85.8%, the best showing for any May in its history. That number was also 1.7 percentage points higher than the same month of 2012.

Airlines have no choice but to go along for the ride with the economy, meaning that even with hedges, rising fuel prices and weak travel demand can drastically affect their bottom line. Furthermore, the need to be more fuel and space efficient requires the constant upgrading/purchasing of planes, which is, in itself, very costly. Since 1990 we've seen more than 100 airline bankruptcies, including every major carrier since 2002. US Airways (NYSE: LCC  ) , for instance, may be the talk of the town now that it's merging with AMR, but keep in mind, as well, that it declared bankruptcy twice last decade and still sports $2.4 billion in net debt.

There were also reports on Monday that the Washington, D.C., airspace was overloaded due to the cutback in controllers. Some southbound flights from Newark Airport had to turn back because Washington air traffic control could not accommodate them. Associated Press pointed out that an 8 a.m. US Airways (NYSE: LCC  ) Shuttle flight from Washington to New York left the gate on time but had to wait almost two hours to take off, causing it to arrive in New York later than the 8 a.m. Amtrak Acela train.
