Top 5 Biotech Stocks To Watch Right Now

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- Not a day goes by on Wall Street without certain stocks that trade for $10 a share or less experiencing massive spikes higher. Traders savvy enough to follow the low-priced names and trade them with discipline and sound risk management are banking ridiculous coin on a regular basis.

Just take a look at some of the big movers in the under-$10 complex from Thursday, including QLT (QLTI), which is ripping higher by 16%; OHR Pharma (OHRP), which is jumping higher by 14%; UniPixel (UNXL), which is soaring higher by 13%; and ParkerVision (PRKR), which is trending higher by 10%. You don't even have to catch the entire move in lower-priced stocks such as these to make outsized returns when trading.

One low-priced biotech stock that recently exploded to the upside was Northwest Biotherapeutics (NWBO), which I highlighted in June 12's "5 Stocks Under $10 Set to Soar Higher" at around $6.70 a share. I mentioned in that piece that shares of Northwest Biotherapeutics had been uptrending over the last month, with the stock moving higher from its low of $4.87 to its recent high at that time of $6.80 a share. That uptrend started right off NWBO's 200-day moving and the stock was just starting to spike higher off its 50-day moving average. That spike was quickly pushing shares of NWBO within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade above some key overhead resistance levels at $6.72 to $6.80 a share.

Advisors' Opinion:

Since 2008's implosion from the stock, the interest in Savient Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:SVNT) has been waning. There was a brief burst of bullishness in September of last year, which stirred the bullish pot a little. But, when SVNT started to fade in October of that year - just as quickly as it had perked up - what lingering hopes there were for the stock finally started to melt away. By the middle of this year, pretty much everyone had written Savient Pharmaceuticals off as a lost cause. Big mistake. Over the last few days, SVNT has almost wiggled its way buck into a bullish zone.

It's still too soon to say Savient Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ:SVNT) is off and running. In fact, the stock's decidedly NOT off and running yet. But, it's not too soon to put SVNT on your watchlist of potential breakout candidates, as it's much closer to a breakout than most anyone can see.

Judging from the company it's keeping Green Automotive Co. (OTCMKTS:GACR) may have just made its way into the upper echelon of small cap stock opportunities. The electric car company joins Elite Pharmaceuticals Inc. (OTCBB:ELTP), Amarantus Bioscience Holdings, Inc. (OTCBB:AMBS), and only three other companies as Wall-Street.com's "Best 6 Stocks" for January of 2014. As one of the top information resources for investors - particularly in terms of information regarding small and micro cap stocks - being named among the site's top pick is an accolade for AMBS, ELTP, and GACR. Even more impressive is that Green Automotive Co. was the only consumer-goods name among those six. Amarantus Bioscience Holdings and Elite Pharmaceuticals are biotechnology names... an industry that can and often does attract a lot of attention just by the nature of the business. The other three names making the "Best 6" list were an energy explorer, a power-management technology manufacturer, and prescription/medical food producer. For an electric car manufacturer to make the list speaks quite highly of GACR.

Exactly one month ago today I penned some bullish thoughts on Elite Pharmaceuticals Inc. (OTCBB:ELTP). If you're familiar with the company - or a regular reader of this site - then you may know why that sounds a little "off." See, at the time, ELTP shares were falling rather quickly, giving up all the gains they had made just a few days before. Almost needless to say, my premise was not a well received one. Let's just say I received some "colorful disagreements" by being optimistic about the biopharma company.

What: Shares of biopharmaceutical company Medivation (NASDAQ: MDVN  ) sank as much as 11% after rival Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ  ) announced it was purchasing Aragon Pharmaceuticals to get ahold of its experimental advanced prostate cancer drug, ARN-509.

  • [By Keith Speights]

Medivation (NASDAQ: MDVN  ) also presents a threat to Provenge. The biotech obtained approval for Xtandi last August. The prostate cancer drug is approved for patients who weren't helped by chemotherapy.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Shares of Medivation (MDVN) were halted at 2:48 p.m. today while up 2.7% at $96.89. The reason for the halt: Medivation’s Xtandi was approved for use in “pre-chemo metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer” by the FDA.

Citigroup’s Yaron Werber explains the significance:

Overall the updated Xtandi label is in-line with expectations and is now better than the Zytiga label. The new indication is for the treatment of patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer which is the same as the Zytiga indication and encompasses the pre-chemo and post-chemo segments. In the clinical section of the label the statistically significant improvement in overall survival from PREVAIL is included, compared to the Zytiga label which states the analysis of overall survival did not meet statistical significance.

We Continue To Like Stock Into TERRAIN and Breast Cancer DataThe risk/reward is positive for TERRAIN with data at YE:14 or early 5. Recall, there was no interim analysis and the study enrolled M1 patients so PFS should be roughly similar to the 16 months that was in PREVAIL (also an M1 population). In addition, breast cancer is upside to expectations in our view and we expect ph2a Xtandi data in AR+ TNBC at SABCS in December.

Shares of Medivation have gained 1.6% to $98.46 at 5:07 p.m. in after-hours trading.

  • [By Brian Orelli]

The largest impact to sales came from competition from new prostate cancer drugs Johnson & Johnson's (NYSE: JNJ  ) Zytiga and Astellas Pharma and Medivation's (NASDAQ: MDVN  ) Xtandi. In December, Zytiga was approved for use in patients who haven't received chemotherapy, the same patients that Provenge is approved to treat. Xtandi is still only approved as a second-line treatment after chemotherapy, but is listed as an earlier treatment in the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Compendium, the oncologist's bible for off-label treatment that insurers often use to make coverage decisions.
